I was looking for the right type of microalgae to culture as food for my brine shrimps and compile a list of possible candidates that have been used in culturing brine shrimps in commercial and lab settings.
A word of caution: based on my own and some other biologist’s personal experiences, we found it quite hard to get uncontaminated algae culture from eBay sellers catering for aquarium hobbies. The unwanted species may not be harmful to brine shrimps but they can be too large to be a food source, so might cause undesirable cloudiness for the tank as the cells keep suspending and multiplying in the water. My personal advice is, only try this if you know some established vendors that sell specifically to educational and research institutes and source your microalgae from them instead.

*Brineshrimpdirect refers to those algae as diatoms which is not correct. Diatoms are under the umbrella of algae, but not all algae are diatoms. Diatoms are a specific group of algae with the unique feature of silica wall - https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40095-014-0138
